Steve Smith scheduled a visit with the New York Giants this week before signing with the Eagles out of nowhere. The free agent wide receiver is recovering from microfracture surgery on his knee.
Steve Smith Attacked By Giants Fans On Facebook
↵Steve i hope you blow out ur knee again. By this time next year you will be selling rock in Compton.↵That’s mean-spirited, racist, a complete over-reaction to a football player choosing to play for a different team ... and about the kindest of the comments Bleeding Green Nation screencapped. And one person liked it on Facebook.

How much more? According to Mike Garafolo, Smith’s new deal is a one-year contract worth $4 million, including $2 million in guarantees. Geoff Musher reports that the Giants were unable to offer a competing contract to Smith.
It originally appeared as though the Giants were favorites to land Smith since he was recovering from microfracture surgery, but, just like this entire free agency period, the Eagles swooped in and made an offer too good to be overcome by others. The Giants believed he would miss the first month or so of the season, but Smith believes he is “pretty close” to playing. Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News, among others, reports that Smith may not begin the season on the physically unable to perform list.

Getty ImagesHaving played on the team since his rookie year in 2007, Smith doesn’t need to be sold on playing for the Giants. He’ll be there to let the team know how his knee is recovering from microfracture surgery. Smith had a season-ending knee injury in December that required surgery and the recovery is not yet over.
The Giants are the only team he has scheduled a meeting with, likely due to his knee. The prevailing thought is that Smith will miss at least the first month of the season. A return to the Giants is his likely course of action, provided the team is confident in how well the knee will hold up.
