The makeover to the offense by Aron Winter continues to impress. Joao Plata scored a late goal to give Toronto FC a huge home win over Real Salt Lake.
Toronto FC Vs. Real Salt Lake: Plata’s Strike Gives Reds Three Points
Plata took a right footed shot from the left side of the penalty box and beat Real Salt Lake keeper Nick Rimando on the lower corner of the goal. Newcomer Peri Marosevic helped set up the play for Plata.
Toronto pushed the issue with their new offense early and often in this one. The Reds had early chances with Marosevic and Danny Kovermans.
Real had a few chances of their own with Fabian Espindola and Luis Gil but nothing was able to get by the updated Reds defense. Winter placed one of his new Designated Players Torsten Frings in the center of his defense tonight and it seemed to pay off even though his partner Andy Iro had a few shaky moments.
The win pushes Toronto to 23 points on the season, good enough for seventh place in the Eastern Conference. RSL stays at 36 points on the year and loses a chance to move up in the standings.
