With the summer transfer window just a few hours from closing, it appears as if the Los Angeles Galaxy are working hard to make room for Robbie Keane by trading away Juan Pablo Angel, who appears set to join the Philadelphia Uion. IrishCentral.com is reporting that the Galaxy confirmed that they are trying to get the deal done by close of business on Sunday. Tottenham, for whom Keane is currently under contract, are apparently prepared to allow him to leave on a free.
MLS Transfer Rumor: Robbie Keane Likely Joining Galaxy, Juan Pablo Angel Appears Union Bound
As it was on Friday when news of the deal first broke, the Galaxy are still trying to make room for Keane by trading Angel. The Union have emerged as the most likely landing spot for the 35-year-old striker, at least that’s how it looks according to a series of Tweets from fellow Colombian Faryd Mondragon.
The moves would seem to give both the Union and the Galaxy what they want. Since parting ways with Carlos Ruiz, Union coach Peter Nowak has been open about wanting a real finisher. Whether or not Angel has lost a step, he still seems capable of scoring some goals for a team that badly needs them.
The Galaxy have been bitterly disappointed with Angel’s performance so far this season (just three goals in 22 games) and are understandably looking for an upgrade. LAG Confidential thinks Keane would be a significant upgrade:
Keane will also be able to help out the Galaxy midfield. The unit that has had trouble against the top teams in the past will be helped by Keane’s ability to drop deeper, help hold the ball and give the rest of the guys the chance to run off of him. All in all, this looks like a fantastic move for LA and oh yeah, we’re rid of Angel.
One way or another, this should all be decided by Sunday evening. While Angel could still be traded after then, Keane’s paperwork would have to be submitted by the close of the transfer window.
