What has been rumored for several days is now official as Robbie Keane has become the Los Angeles Galaxy's newest Designated Player. The team announced the deal on Monday, but has not yet made official the fate of Juan Pablo Angel, whose fate has apparently been decided. There are strong indications that Angel will be joining Chivas USA.
Robbie Keane Joins LA Galaxy, No Word On Juan Pablo Angel
"I am delighted, honored and very excited to be joining the LA Galaxy," Keane said in a Galaxy release. "I have always wanted to come and play in MLS so it’s the perfect combination for me and a dream come true. My family and I have already been made to feel very welcome in telephone calls from Tim Leiweke and Bruce Arena. Also when David Beckham came and trained at Spurs recently he couldn't speak highly enough about the Galaxy, their fans and the league in general, so I can’t wait to get over and get started."
The 31-year-old was playing in the English Premier League as recently as last year, but he has been on the outs with Tottenham for awhile. Last year, he played just 12 games across all competitions with Tottenham, starting only five times. He made nine other EPL appearances with West Ham United, where he scored his only two goals of the season. He is just a year removed from a season in which he scored six times in 20 EPL appearances with Spurs, a year which saw him score 28 goals in 52 games for club and country.
