Juan Pablo Angel Officially Traded To Chivas USA

Juan Pablo Angel has officially been traded to Chivas USA, the team announced on Thursday. In exchange for the former Designated Player, the Goats sent the Los Angeles Galaxy a third-round round 2012 Supplemental Draft Pick, which essentially translates to a seventh-round pick. Although it wasn't announced as part of the deal, many have speculated that the Galaxy are also paying a significant portion of Angel's $1.25 million salary. He will not count as a DP with Chivas USA.

“Juan Pablo is a great pick up for us because he knows how to score goals and has scored the most goals in the League (MLS) through the last five years. Outside of his experience and ability on the field, he’s a classy person and I think that another experienced classy person in our locker-room is a positive,” Chivas USA coach Robin Fraser said in a team release. “It is a win-win when you get a good player and a good person who fits into what we are trying to do.”

Angel was reportedly considering several options: a trade to the Philadelphia Union, this trade or retirement. He recently told ESPN Deportes that he wanted to stay in Los Angeles because he had just recently moved his family there.

The trade gives Chivas USA another weapon, but it wasn't necessarily one they needed. Forwards Alejandro Moreno, Justin Braun or Marcos Mondaini have all played as well or better than Angel this season, but one of them is likely expendable. Considering Angel is unlikely to stick around much beyond this year, the 32-year-old Moreno would seem the most likely player to be moved.
