LSU wide receiver Russell Shepard, once thought to be in the clear to play for the Tigers in their season-opening showdown against Oregon, may still be suspended for the game in relation to a compliance issue, according to LSU coach Les Miles. Miles told CBSSports.com that LSU doesn't know whether Shepard will be eligible for the September 3 clash at Cowboys Stadium.

“It’s premature at this point,” he said, adding this typically Miles-ian gem: “When I know more, I’ll be forthcoming. Or I won’t be forthcoming, and I’ll be honestly deceptive.“Miles is likely not actually lying or planning to lie about Shepard’s eligibility — but it’s Les Miles, so who knows, really?
Shepard could be a crucial piece of the LSU offense in 2011, having racked up 33 catches for 254 yards and 32 carries for 226 rushing yards as a sophomore in 2010, and may need to step up as the Tigers attempt to replace Terrance Toliver. And if the alleged compliance issue at hand — Shepard living with an LSU employee — turns out to be an impermissible benefit under NCAA rules and grounds for suspension, the Tigers could miss him dearly against the high-speed Ducks.
