Words really can't describe just how bad the Cincinnati Bengals' offense looked in the first quarter of their second preseason game against the New York Jets. Until the final drive of the quarter, rookie starting QB Andy Dalton had been intercepted twice (one wasn't his fault as a good pass went through A.J. Green's hands) and fumbled once without completing a single pass.

Meanwhile, the Jets' first play from scrimmage was a 20-yard completion from Mark Sanchez to Plaxico Burress, Burress' first catch in Jet Green. They drove to within field goal range, but Nick Folk pushed his attempt right. Eric Smith caught the carom off A.J. Green's hands, returned it for a while, then lateraled the ball to Darrelle Revis, who returned it another 21 yards.
On the Jets' very next play, Sanchez hit Santonio Holmes on a play action slant for a 16-yard touchdown. Holmes was wide open, and the Bengals' true ineptitude was beginning to show through. A Jet legend pined for a chance like this in the regular season:
How many times can we play the Bengals this year??
The Bengals proceeded to go three-and-out on their next drive, and after an exchange of punts, Jim Leonhard intercepted Dalton again, this time for 35 yards, and the Jets got an easy field goal out of it.
Dalton's first completion of the game wouldn't come until his sixth attempt with 6:22 left in the quarter, yet the 7-yard pass to Jordan Shipley would only result in another three-and-out.
This is the sheer ineptitude of the Bengals offense this year. The defense looked decent enough — the obvious exception being Holmes' touchdown — with Domata Peko and Rey Maualuga creating havoc on the inside, but there doesn't seem to be any way for them to consistently put points on the board.
Miss you, Carson Palmer. Miss you, Ochocinco.
