Both teams had traded punts on the first four possessions of the quarter before Giants kicker Rhys Lloyd, kicking for an injured Lawrence Tynes (thigh bruise), connected on a 25-yard field goal with 3:33 to play in the quarter.
The Bears responded with a six-play, 81-yard drive which was highlighted by a 37-yard strike from quarterback Jay Cutler to Devin Hester and a 42-yard catch-and-run by running back Matt Forte, who changed directions and nearly reached the end zone if it weren't for the remarkable hustle of defensive end Justin Tuck, who knocked Forte out of bounds at the Giants' seven yard line. Two incomplete passes from Cutler to Hester brought on Robbie Gould to kick a 23-yard field goal.
Giants wide receiver Devin Thomas gained 73 yards on the ensuing kickoff, setting the team up with excellent field position.
Giants punter Matt Dodge, who is fending off veteran Steve Weatherford, uncorked a 63-yard punt in his first attempt of the night.
