Mike Preston at Ravens Insider reports that the New York Giants might not need to receive a first-round pick in exchange for defensive end Osi Umenyiora. They reportedly could content themselves with a second-round pick.
Osi Umenyiora Could Be Traded For Second Round Pick, According To Report
As of Monday, it looked like the Ravens, Patriots, Falcons, Browns and Seahawks, at the very least, might have interest in Umenyiora if the price were right, but no one wanted to give up a first-round pick. For a second-round pick, things will probably be different, and with the ongoing conflict between Umenyiora and Giants GM Jerry Reese, it sounds like Umenyiora is likely to be moved somewhere.
Baltimore certainly seems like a possible destination, but Preston reports that salary cap issues might get in the way.
[Ravens GM Ozzie] Newsome might do the deal, according to the source, if the Ravens can get Pro Bowl defensive tackle Haloti Ngata to sign a new, multi-year contract which would create substantial room under the cap. If Newsome can't get Ngata signed and Umenyiora agreed to a new deal, Newsome is concerned some of his younger stars like quarterback Joe Flacco and running back Ray Rice might become upset because they are next in line for new contracts.
