The New York Jets have done work in the 2011 NFL free agency period locking up WR Santonio Holmes to a long-term deal and bringing in free agent WR Plaxico Burress. The moves at receiver may not stop there as the team is reportedly bringing in WR Derrick Mason for a visit.
Derrick Mason, New York Jets Reportedly Meeting
Mason, of course, was one of a number of veterans released from the Baltimore Ravens. There were some rumblings that he could return at a lower rate but maybe that won't happen. SB Nation's Gang Green Nation thinks that this could affect a couple of things with the Jets.
Getting Mason would probably change my feelings about a Cotchery trade. Sentimentally, I want Cotchery to stay. He is probably a better option in a vacuum. If Mason can come at a vastly cheaper price, and dealing Jerricho can free up cap room, it might be worth it.
Cotchery has been rumored to be on the market and, as GGN points out, acquiring Mason could lead them to dealing him.
Mason is 37 years old so he’s obviously a short-term fix but a good one. 2010 was the first year since 2001 that he didn’t have 1,000 yards receiving so it’s not like he hasn’t been productive.
Will the Jets make another free agency splash? Stay tuned to Gang Green Nation for the latest.
