Veteran wide receiver Derrick Mason was cut by the Baltimore Ravens on July 28. Now, he’ll be looking for an elusive Super Bowl ring with another one of the AFC’s powerhouses: He’s signed with the New York Jets, tweeting “Jet fuel is full time to fly!!!!!“ Saturday afternoon. The Carroll County Times’ Aaron Wilson confirmed Mason’s tweet, reporting that Mason sent out a release to reporters announcing the move.
Derrick Mason Signs With New York Jets
Mason had been reportedly meeting with the Jets earlier this week, and the likelihood of him joining the Jets probably increased significantly when New York cut receiver Jerricho Cotchery.
Mason will likely replace Cotchery, joining Santonio Holmes and Plaxico Burress in a receiving corps that is packed with big names. Of those three, though, Mason’s arguably been the most consistently productive wideout: in his 14 seasons with the Ravens and Tennessee Titans, Mason’s had eight 1,000-yard campaigns, and he has caught more than 60 passes in every year since 2000.
That sort of reliability might be a boon for the Jets’ Mark Sanchez, who could use a reliable wideout to go with Holmes, whose knack for the big play provides plenty of excitement and obscures his deficiencies as a possession receiver.
