Andre Ethier Injury: Knee Shuts Outfielder Down For Season

There was a bit of a dust-up two weeks ago about the knee of Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier. He didn't understand why he was still playing on a right knee that would need surgery after the season, implying that he was being a good soldier and just playing whenever manager Don Mattingly asked. The Dodgers' response was, "Wait, what? Your knee is hurt that badly?" Just a slight communication gap, there.

With three weeks to go in the season, the Dodgers are officially letting Ethier rest for the rest of the year. From the Los Angeles Dodgers official Twitter account:

Ethier will seek a second opinion on his right knee. The team and Andre have decided that since the knee has not improved he should discontinue playing and seek all opinions to determine the next course of action.

When Ethier has been out of the lineup in recent weeks, the Dodgers have gone with a Juan Rivera/Tony Gwynn, Jr. combination, so it seems as if that's what they'll use for the rest of the season, though there's a chance that the recalled Jerry Sands will get an extended look.
