NFL Combine 2012: Michigan Center Hopes To Break Bench Press Record

Former Michigan center David Molk arrived at the 2012 NFL Combine on Wednesday with the rest of the offensive lineman. On Saturday, Molk will get to do position drills and tests, but he won't run the 40-yard dash. Molk has suffered numerous injuries in his career at Michigan, including coming off a foot injury he suffered in the Sugar Bowl, so he won't participate in most drills. One drill Molk will participate in is the bench press record, and he hopes to break the record for reps.

One of the drills Molk will do is the bench press, and he said he hopes to break the combine record of 49 reps at 225 pounds, set last year by defensive tackle Stephen Paea. Molk said he recently did 39 reps after a full workout that included 10 sets of bench, ending at 495 pounds.

Molk also cited the strength of his 22-inch neck as a big selling point for teams looking to draft a center in 2012, because he won’t get whiplash.

“I don’t think you can quantify the strength of your neck, I just think that my neck is one of my better things I have, I guess,” Molk told the Detroit Free Press. “If you think about it, the first thing I hit with is my face. When you have a guy that’s an inch and a half away from you on every single play, you’re going to hit him with your head. And whiplash is one of the biggest things that will cause a concussion. My head won’t whip, and I can hit people harder and I’ll never get hurt.”
