NFL Combine 2012: Quinton Coples, Melvin Ingram Impress In Drills

North Carolina defensive end Quinton Coples is expected to be a top 10 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, and he did nothing in the drills to damage that belief. The 6'5", 285-pounder ran an unofficial 4.72 40-yard dash, including a 1.63 10-yard split. By comparison, the 1.63 10-yard split is just 0.03 seconds slower than the 10-yard split of Oregon Ducks running back LeMichael James.

Coples also put down a 31.5” vertical jump, which is about average. Adding that do his 6’6” frame means he can block a lot of passing lanes like he did in the Senior Bowl. Coples recorded an 8’9” jump in the broad jump.

SB Nation’s Mocking The Draft thought Coples looked like more of a 4-3 end than a 3-4 end in his drills.

I felt that Quinton Coples struggled a little bit with stiff hips. But he’s a long guy that typically do struggle with that sort of thing. I don’t think he’ll be picked by a 3-4 team. I see him as a 4-3 defensive end.

South Carolina's Melvin Ingram also looked very fluid in his drills, running a 4.66 40-yard dash after measuring in at just over 6'1" and 264 pounds. Ingram also put up 28 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press while looking very nimble and athletic in the stand-up drills, furthering the belief that he can play in the NFL either with his hand on the ground or standing up.
