Ravens Free Agency: No Deal Imminent With Ben Grubbs

The Baltimore Ravens have plenty on their plate this offseason. They're trying to sign quarterback Joe Flacco to a contract extension, gauging the feasibility of re-signing Ray Rice before potentially using their franchise tag on him and trying to keep abreast of the free agent market and the developments surrounding the upcoming 2012 NFL Draft. In addition to all of that, there are plenty of other issues, like the impending free agency of left guard and Pro Bowler Ben Grubbs.

Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun reports that Grubbs’ agent, Pat Dye, had a “positive” meeting with the Ravens during the 2012 NFL Combine in Indianapolis last week, but made it clear that there is no immediate anticipation of a deal.

“Ben is extremely highly regarded in this league. He’s in the prime of his career and may or may not have another opportunity to sign another significant contract,” Dye said. “He needs to be sure that he explores all his options. He loves it there and would welcome being back there, but anything that the Ravens present him, we would have to evaluate it in the context of what the market might bear to him. Is that to say something might not happen before free agency starts? No, that’s not to say that at all. I would expect that we would be talking in the near future, but I don’t think a [deal] is imminent at this point.”

If the Ravens are unable to come to terms with both Rice and Grubbs before the March 13 free agency deadline, they may be parting with one of their key players.
