Matt Kemp has shoulder surgery, expected ready for opening day

Los Angeles Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp had successful shoulder surgery Friday and should be ready to go for Opening Day.

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced outfielder Matt Kemp underwent surgery to his non-throwing shoulder Friday to repair a torn labrum but is still expected to be ready for opening day.

The procedure lasted 60 minutes according to the team’s press release with team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache also focusing on “some minor debridement of the rotator cuff.” Kemp will begin physical therapy in 7-10 days and should be back to swinging a bat by the time January rolls around.

While Kemp should be good to go for the 2013 season, this surgery will likely keep him from playing for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic next spring.

Kemp was limited to only 106 games in 2012 due to a series of nagging injuries. Last season’s NL MVP runner up hit .303/.367/.538 with 23 home runs, 74 runs and 69 RBI this year in 449 plate appearances. Kemp signed an eight-year, $160 million deal last November after leading the National League in runs (115), home runs (39) and RBI (126) in 2011.
