49ers vs. Rams 2012: Conservative gameplan, miscues upset San Fran fans

Poor play-calling and execution resulted in a disappointing overtime loss for the San Francisco 49ers and their fans.

The San Francisco 49ers let a win escape with several miscues and poor execution in a 16-13 loss to the St. Louis Rams on Sunday afternoon.

While some blame can be placed on quarterback Colin Kaepernick, the offensive gameplan didn't do him any favors with conservative play-calling. Kaepernick did have his mistakes though, including an intentional grounding penalty in the end zone which resulted in a (controversial) safety. Late in the fourth quarter, he tossed a pitch which was too high and was recovered by the Rams for a touchdown.

Still, Niners Nation doesn’t believe it’s time to panic on the Kaepernick experiment:

I realize people will immediately go to the low-hanging fruit that is the Alex Smith-Colin Kaepernick controversy, but as Harbaugh sometimes says, I hope people will look at the bigger picture.

Defensively, the 49ers looked like their usual selves, allowing just 293 total yards to St. Louis. San Francisco stuffed the running game, holding the Rams to 3.1 yards per carry. What was missing for the defensive unit was turnovers, which played a key factor in the 49ers win over the New Orleans Saints last week.

The good news for the 49ers is that they don’t have to play the Rams the rest of the season after getting two of their toughest challenges from their division foe.
