Brandon Morrow Hitting DL With Oblique Injury

Toronto Blue Jays starter Brandon Morrow was removed after throwing nine pitches on Monday, and while initial word was that he'd hurt his side, of course what that meant was that he'd hurt his oblique.

The initial word on Morrow’s hurt oblique was that he was day-to-day, but of course oblique injuries are never day-to-day, as they require some weeks of recovery.

So in unsurprising news, Brandon Morrow is off to the disabled list with a strained oblique:

There is no timetable at present, but these things typically don’t resolve themselves in the minimum 15 days. And teams and pitchers have to be careful, because oblique injuries can be aggravated if they aren’t managed with caution.

Morrow is likely to be replaced in the rotation by Jesse Chavez, although Brett Cecil has some outside chance. Chavez has been very effective with triple-A Las Vegas, working as a starter for the first time since 2004. Over 144 big-league innings in relief, he owns a 78 ERA+ and a high home-run rate. As for Morrow, he leaves strong numbers, and hopes to return to them before too long.
