Daniel Hudson Will Have Tommy John Surgery

This was inevitable once it was announced last week that Diamondbacks righthander Daniel Hudson had a “100 percent UCL tear”, and now it’s official: he’ll have Tommy John surgery. From The Sporting News:

An MRI exam Wednesday in Phoenix showed there was a tear in Hudson’s ulnar collateral ligament, but Hudson wanted a second opinion. The second opinion confirmed the need for surgery.

“Since its official I guess I can let everyone know I will be undergoing Tommy John surgery to fix my elbow,” Hudson tweeted Saturday.

The surgery will end Hudson’s 2012 season — which wasn’t going well, with a 7.35 ERA, likely due to the injury — but most pitchers who have TJ surgery can now come back within a year, and often can throw as well or better than before the surgery.

At 25, Hudson certainly can still have a long and productive major-league career.
