It’s been said that you should never slide into first base, because you’ll get there more slowly than if you just keep running at top speed.

As Teixeira suspected, he reinjured his left calf when he charged to first base in an attempt to avoid grounding into a game-ending double play Saturday night with the tying run on third. He was playing in his first game since the injury first sidelined him Aug. 27.

“I thought I could play on it at 80 percent or whatever it was,” Teixeira said, according to the Daily News. “I couldn’t, so when I come back next time - whether it’s two days or a week, whatever it’s going to be, I don’t know how long it’s going to be. Mark Teixeira Injury: Yankees 1B Could Be Out Awhile

Girardi told the Associated Press on Sunday that Teixeira was scheduled for an MRI and was likely to miss time, including Sunday’s final game in a four-game series between the Yankees and Orioles.

“I don’t think he’ll be a player for us,” Girardi told the AP. “I’d be surprised, but we’ll just have to wait and see. He’s sore — he doesn’t feel like it’s back to square one, but it’s sore.”

After retreating to the clubhouse, he was removed from the game and sent for an MRI, which confirmed a Grade 1 strain. “I thought I could kind of run through it,” Teixeira said, according to the New York Times. “But instead of loosening up as I was running it kind of tightened up on me.”

Teixeira is hitting .255/.335/.478 with 23 home runs and 81 RBI in 435 at-bats this season. It’s possible that his absence could be filled by Steve Pearce, acquired from Houston in a trade earlier Monday. In 134 at-bats split between the Astros and Orioles this season, Pearce is hitting .254/.333/.396 with three home runs and 22 RBI.
