Buffalo’s first period problems continue against Los Angeles
The Buffalo Sabres are bad, but they also seem like they’re never ready to play.
We already know they’re one of the worst teams in the league, but it’s quite remarkable as to how bad they’ve been in certain situations this season, including the start of nearly every game. It’s the perfect combination of a young team that doesn’t have a lot of talent and doesn’t seem to be adequately prepared to play on any given night.
They entered Tuesday's game against Los Angeles having just scored three first-period goals all season, and after Justin Williams' goal just 1:07 into the game have now been outscored 27-3 in the first period.
They were lucky Tuesday’s deficit wasn’t larger.
Los Angeles finished the first period with a commanding 15-4 edge in the shot department while attempting 29 total shots (goals, saves, misses, blocks) to Buffalo’s 11. That is an almost comically one-sided game, especially when you consider Buffalo had the only power play of the period.
It’s already the fifth time this season Buffalo has been held to five shots or fewer in the first period. It took the Sabres more than seven minutes to record their first shot on goal. For the season, they’ve been outshot 278-142 in the first period. Look at it another way: That means Buffalo is attempting just 33 percent of the total shots on goal in the first period of their games this season.
It’s like men against boys out there at times.
