NFL free agency 2013: Brandon Gibson drawing Dolphins interest

There are a few bigger names amongst free agent wide receivers, but Brandon Gibson is not to be overlooked.

The St. Louis Rams are not in the greatest shape when it comes to their current group of wide receivers, with Danny Amendola, Brandon Gibson and Steve Smith all set to become free agents on Tuesday, and at least one of them is getting some attention from another team.

Jeff Ireland and the Miami Dolphins contacted Gibson's agents this weekend, and apparently, the discussions are pretty serious.

The talks are said to be serious. It is unclear how -- if at all -- a contract offer would affect the Dolphins' pursuit of Mike Wallace, who is expected to command a multiyear contract paying $12 million a year when free agency opens Tuesday.

Gibson wouldn't come cheap either. The former sixth-round pick out of Washington State set career highs in receiving yards (691) and touchdowns (5) on 51 catches last year.

Miami made headlines last week when the Dolphins re-signed WR Brian Hartline to a five-year, $31 million contract, and are also said to be one of the biggest players in the Mike Wallace sweepstakes.

Head coach Joe Philbin is in his second year with the team, along with offensive coordinator Mike Sherman, and you would expect the pair to do better than finishing in the bottom ten of most offensive categories in the league. They’ve both had significant offensive success in the NFL, but it will be interesting to see how much influence they have over Jeff Ireland’s personnel decisions.

At least for right now, it seems like maybe a little. Stay tuned...
