Ravens rumors: Chris Canty visits Baltimore

Free agent defensive tackle Chris Canty took a trip to see the Super Bowl champions.

Chris Canty, the former New York Giants defensive tackle who is set to become a free agent at 4 p.m., has drawn interest from several teams. On Tuesday, he was in Baltimore to visit the Super Bowl champion Ravens, according to Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean.

Canty only played in nine games last season, missing seven due to a knee injury, but he's been a solid player and mostly healthy during his eight-year career. He compiled 26 tackles, three sacks and two tackles for loss in 2012, and it was just the second time he failed to play in all 16 regular-season games. During his time as a professional, split between the Giants and Dallas Cowboys, Canty has 272 tackles, 19 sacks and 21 tackles for loss.

He is generally considered to be a top-10 interior defensive lineman free agent. Canty ranks at No. 7 for his position, according to Pro Football Focus, who gave Canty a 6.6 grade for his injury-shortened 2012 season. That was actually the fourth-highest grade among current free agent interior linemen.

Baltimore is in need of someone to come in and take over at nose tackle. Ma'ake Kemoeatu, the Ravens' starter in 2012, is set to become a free agent, and Terrence Cody, the team's second-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, hasn't developed and isn't ready to step into the starting role. That means Canty, who can play in the 3-4, as well as the 4-3, would be a solid fit in Charm City.

The Ravens may have the advantage of showing off their shiny Lombardi Trophy, but Baltimore isn't the only team in the hunt for Canty. He has received interest from the Green Bay Packers, in addition to the Kansas City Chiefs and Tennessee Titans.
