Vikings re-sign Jerome Simpson to 1-year contract, according to report

Jerome Simpson will be in Minnesota for at least one more season.

The Minnesota Vikings and wide receiver Jerome Simpson have agreed to a one-year contract, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Financial terms of the deal have not been released.

Simpson didn't exactly set the world on fire during his first season with the Vikings in 2012. He served a four-game suspension for a drug arrest last offseason, and in 12 contests, he compiled just 26 catches for 274 yards. That was a steep drop off from his 2011 season with the Cincinnati Bengals, when he had 50 receptions, 725 yards and four touchdowns.

However, since Minnesota agreed to ship Percy Harvin to the Seattle Seahawks, the Vikings are awfully thin at receiver. Aside from Simpson, the current roster of wide outs includes Jarius Wright, Stephen Burton, Chris Summers and Greg Childs -- and that's it. Clearly, the team needed another warm body in the mix. Even if he doesn't put up big numbers next season, Simpson will provide some much needed depth.

The Vikings likely aren't done rebuilding the receiver position. Either through free agency or the NFL Draft, Minnesota must find a player who can step in and become a primary target for quarterback Christian Ponder.
