Packers rumors: Tom Crabtree will become free agent

The Green Bay Packers will try to re-sign Tom Crabtree once he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

The Green Bay Packers will not offer tender to tight end Tom Crabtree before free agency begins at 4 p.m. ET, according to Tom Silverstein of Milwaukee Journal-Sentinal. Instead, the team will attempt to re-sign Crabtree once he hits the open market.

The Packers originally signed Crabtree to their practice squad in 2009, and he made the active roster in 2010. Because he was an undrafted free agent, Green Bay would not receive compensation if they had offered Crabtree tender and he had signed with another team. A tendered offer would have been for at least $1.32 million, per Silverstein, and the team is hoping to re-sign the tight end at a lower price once free agency begins.

Crabtree had a career year in 2012, catching eight passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns in 14 games. The reception total was a career high, as was the yardage, which easily topped his previous best of 61.

As his numbers indicate, the Packers wouldn’t miss Crabtree in the passing game if he were to sign elsewhere. However, he is a solid blocker, and considering how bad Green Bay’s offensive line was in 2012, the team may need all the blocking help it can get.
