Sam Baker re-signs with Falcons according to report

Atlanta wouldn’t let its franchise left tackle get away that easily.

The Atlanta Falcons have re-signed left tackle Sam Baker, according to a report by Alex Marvez of FOX Sports.

The Falcons are in the process of a minor rebuild with cornerback Dunta Robinson, defensive end John Abraham and running back Michael Turner all released during the offseason. They have managed to convince tight end Tony Gonzalez to return but this team will still have a new look in 2013. That new look won't include replacing franchise left tackle Sam Baker, however.

The Falcons re-signed Baker, their starting left tackle since drafting him 21st overall out of USC in 2008. Atlanta traded up in the draft to select Baker and was not keen on letting him walk away after 65 games of protecting Matt Ryan’s blindside.

Baker started 15 games for the Falcons last year, the No. 7 scoring offense in the NFL, while Ryan was sacked just 28 times. While Atlanta has to find replacements for several veterans who have parted ways with the team, the Falcons won’t have to go through the unenviable task of finding a new left tackle.
