Brent Grimes rumors: Dolphins still ‘in mix’ for cornerback

The Dolphins want to upgrade their secondary, and Miami is still eyeing cornerback Brent Grimes.

The Miami Dolphins are still alive in the race to sign free agent cornerback Brent Grimes, according to Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post.

The Dolphins are trying to replace cornerback Sean Smith, who recently signed a three-year, $16.5 million deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. Considering the struggles Smith had at times in 2012, his departure could allow Miami to upgrade at the position. He finished the year with 12 passes defended and two interceptions, but his play was often too inconsistent.

The Cleveland Browns brought in Grimes for a visit. Grimes made his debut for Atlanta in 2007, and since then, he’s recorded 56 passes defended and 13 interceptions. However, he missed all but one game in 2012 after suffering an Achilles injury during the Falcons’ 40-24 win over the Chiefs in Week 1. In 2011, he missed four games due to a knee injury that required minor surgery.

Miami’s pass defense was poor last season, allowing 248.4 yards per game through the air, which ranked 27th in the NFL. The Dolphins finished the season with 10 interceptions, tied for fourth-fewest in the league.
