NFL free agency: Victor Butler visits Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles are rebuilding under Chip Kelly, and linebacker Victor Butler could be part of the plans.

Free agent linebacker Victor Butler visited the Philadelphia Eagles Tuesday, according to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Butler underwent a physical on his visit, per McLane, and it's unclear whether or not he will be offered a contract.

Butler is a four-year veteran out of Oregon State, selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the fourth round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Since then, he's played in 63 games, missing just one in 2010. Butler has compiled 89 tackles, 11 sacks and two tackles for loss during his time with the Cowboys, and in 2012, he finished the year with 25 tackles, three sacks, three forced fumbles and a tackle for loss.

Standing 6'2 and weighing in at 248 pounds, Butler played outside linebacker last season in Dallas's 3-4 defense under coordinator Rob Ryan. He's been contacted this offseason by Ryan's new employer, the New Orleans Saints, as well as the Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Jets and Cleveland Browns, all teams that run the 3-4. With Kelly transitioning the Eagles' D to a 3-4 under coordinator Billy Davis, it's no surprise Butler, 25, is receiving interest from Philadelphia.

With the Cowboys switching from the 3-4 to Monte Kiffin's 4-3 alignment, Butler no longer fits in Dallas's plans. While he hasn't put up outstanding numbers during his career, that's mostly due to the fact that he's been stuck behind DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer on the Cowboys' depth chart.
