NFL free agent tracker: Justin Durant, Cowboys reach 2-year deal

The Cowboys are on the verge of signing free agent linebacker Justin Durant.

The Dallas Cowboys have agreed to a two-year contract with free agent linebacker Justin Durant, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Cowboys plan to sign Durant as soon as they free up some cap space, but financial details of the deal have not been disclosed.

Durant, a six-year veteran out of Hampton, spent the last two seasons with the Detroit Lions. In 2012, he played in 16 games, compiling a career-high 103 tackles and adding seven tackles for loss, three pass deflections and one-half sack. The Jacksonville Jaguars selected Durant in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft. In four seasons with Jacksonville, he had 272 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, 11 pass deflections and two sacks.

The Cowboys are transitioning from Rob Ryan’s 3-4 defense to Monte Kiffin’s 4-3 alignment, and Durant, who checks in at 6’1, 240 pounds, would appear to be a nice fit at linebacker in Dallas. His ability to play well in pass defense would be an asset to Kiffin as the defensive coordinator employs his patented Tampa 2 coverage.
