Seahawks rumors: Tyler Thigpen on ‘short list’ to back up Russell Wilson

Tyler Thigpen would provide the Seattle Seahawks with read-option experience as a backup.

The Seattle Seahawks are considering free agent Tyler Thigpen as Russell Wilson's backup at quarterback, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen. Thigpen would be a good fit in Seattle's read-option offense, as he led a similar attack in college at Coastal Carolina.

ESPN’s John Clayton seems to believe Thigpen will indeed be Seattle’s choice.

Thigpen is a seven-year veteran, selected in the seventh round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings before making the roster with the Kansas City Chiefs, and he has just one season with extensive starting experience. That was in 2008, when he rose to the top of the Chiefs' depth chart after Damon Huard and Brodie Croyle suffered season-ending injuries. During that season, Thigpen started 11 games and played in three others, completing 54.8 percent of his passes for 2,608 yards, 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also rushed for 386 yards and three scores.

Aside from 2008, Thigpen has never played in more than five games in a single season. Over the course of his career with the Chiefs, Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills, he has a 54.0 completion percentage, 3,222 yards, 21 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. Thigpen has rushed for 469 yards on 79 attempts.

While Thigpen could be a serviceable backup with option experience, he’s no Wilson. In his rookie campaign last season, the Seahawks’ starter completed 64.1 percent of his passes for 3,118 yards, 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, and he rushed for 489 yards and four TDs on 94 carries.
