Buccaneers sign WR Steve Smith to 1-year contract, according to report

Steve Smith will try to reboot his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed free agent wide receiver Steve Smith to a one-year contract, according to USA Today's Mike Garafolo. The deal is worth $715,000 with a $65,000 workout bonus, per Stephen Holder of the Tampa Bay Times.

Smith had a breakout season with the New York Giants in 2009, hauling in 107 catches for 1,220 yards and seven touchdowns in 16 regular-season games. In 2010, he suffered a severe ACL injury and hasn't been the same since. Smith has played in just 27 games for the Giants, Philadelphia Eagles and St. Louis Rams over the last three seasons, compiling 73 catches for 784 yards and four TDs.

The Giants selected Smith in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft. A six-year veteran out of USC, he will add depth to the Bucs' wide receiver corps and likely compete for a spot in the rotation behind Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams. Tampa Bay's current offensive coordinator, Mike Sullivan, was wide receivers coach for the Giants during Smith's solid 2009 season. Perhaps the familiarity will help the wide receiver get back on track.

Tampa Bay’s passing game ranked 10th in the NFL last season, averaging 248.9 yards per game.
