There wasn’t much Tiger Woods liked about his second round at the PGA Championship. He struggled off the tee again, was disgusted by a couple of his approach shots and three-putted twice coming in. Despite the issues, Woods was able to card an even-par 70 and is 1-over through two rounds.
PGA Championship leaderboard: Tiger Woods shoots 70, 1-over for the tournament
Tiger Woods wasn’t sharp on Friday and will have a lot of ground to make up over the weekend if he’s going to play his way into contention.
Woods had early issues off the tee, finding the rough on each of his first four holes. An early bogey at No. 2 dropped him to 2-over and nine strokes off the lead. It appeared he found a groove with back-to-back birdies at No. 5 and No. 6, but the success was short-lived. Four pars and a bogey later, Woods was even through 11 holes while other players were posting rounds in the low- and mid-60s.
He made an aggressive play on No 14, driving the green on the par-4 323-yard hole. His eagle attempt missed long, leaving five feet for a birdie. He misread the putt, however, and three-putted on his way to a par.
Woods went on to make a birdie on the next hole, but three-putted No. 16 for another bogey. A birdie at No. 17 had him back in the red on the round, but his par putt on No. 18 came up short and he finished an even-par round of 70.
He was close to shooting a much better round, with a number of putts either just missing or catching the lip, and he was visibly displeased with his play at times. His play off the tee improved as the round went on, but Woods failed to take advantage with a few errant approach shots, like the one he hit on No. 8.
While Woods struggled to make his way into the red, several players in the afternoon group took advantage of the course conditions and posted low rounds. Jason Dufner leads the way at 9-under after setting the Oak Hill course record with a 7-under 63.
