Fantasy football waiver wire: 5 quarterbacks to target for Week 6

Need a replacement for Drew Brees this week? Here are some waiver wire options worth a look.

Bruce Kluckhohn-USA TODAY Sports

Once again, only two teams are on bye this week, making it a little easier to figure out your lineups for Week 6. The problem is that those teams are the New Orleans Saints and Kansas City Chiefs, both fantasy goldmines. So owners can't use Drew Brees or Alex Smith this week, but if you feel like rolling the dice then here are a few options worth looking at on the waiver wire (owned in 50 percent or fewer of Yahoo! leagues):

Waiver Wire Targets: QB RB WR TE Injury Replacements

Carson Palmer, Arizona Cardinals (owned in 30 percent of leagues): The Cardinals are still 4-1 even without having Palmer since the season opener, but they need his shoulder nerve to get right after being forced to throw Logan Thomas to the wolves on Sunday. Palmer could be back as soon as this week, but as always we will have to wait and see. If he does come back he will have a juicy matchup with Washington's porous defense. Keep holding on to him in 14-team leagues.

Teddy Bridgewater, Minnesota Vikings (owned in 18 percent of leagues): With almost two weeks of rest, Bridgewater's ankle should be a non-factor. We'll have to see how he fares against better defenses than Atlanta's, but he certainly looked the part in his NFL debut. After Christian Ponder's horror show against the Green Bay Packers, Bridgewater's leash couldn't be longer. The Detroit Lions defense will be a tougher test for him, especially if the ankle is still acting up, but he has enticing upside for the rest of the year.

Blake Bortles, Jacksonville Jaguars (owned in 17 percent of leagues): Bortles had the right matchup with an ailing Pittsburgh Steelers defense, but in the end he looked like ... well, like a rookie quarterback. Bortles threw for just 191 yards and tossed two interceptions in another up-and-down performance. He still has untapped potential, though, and he gets another great matchup with a Tennessee Titans defense that just blew a 28-3 lead. This time, Bortles has a better chance of capitalizing.

Mike Glennon, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (owned in 6 percent of leagues): For the second week in a row, Glennon looked like a real NFL quarterback leading a real NFL offense. That should be enough to win him the starting job for good, but who knows what Lovie Smith's next move will be. Glennon isn't a sexy fantasy starter but he provides steady QB2 upside, which is valuable in the bye-week grind. He will be facing the Baltimore Ravens, who rank 27th in the league with 269.2 passing yards allowed per game. If nothing else, Glennon's presence has been a boon to Vincent Jackson, who was nearly invisible with Josh McCown under center.

Austin Davis, St. Louis Rams (owned in 5 percent of leagues): Maybe we should start taking Austin Davis seriously. It's harder to ignore him after two straight weeks with three touchdowns and more than 300 yards, and a genuine connection with Brian Quick. That said, Davis put up those numbers against the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles. The San Francisco 49ers will be less forgiving this week, and after that he gets the Seattle Seahawks. If you happen to own Davis, this is a prime sell-high opportunity.
