FanDuel: With all these byes, what good/bad matchups are even left?

It’s a much shallower weekly league pool that we normally have. Thanks a lot for all those byes, NFL.

Tom Szczerbowski

This is the first week of the byes. It’s Saturday as this is published, so you know that, but whatever, I’m the one writing. Being the first week of byes, it feels like the league should ease into it. You know, two teams, or four if they aren’t particularly fantasy-intensive.

But no, the NFL, being the buncha jerks they are, put six teams on a bye this week, and with Seattle, Denver, Cincinnati and Arizona among them, there’s a lot of fantasy stuff gone. (Cleveland and St. Louis, too, but, you know, shrug.)

Your season-long fantasy team likely lost someone this week, but that's part of the deal. You'll miss someone, some week. In FanDuel, though, there's no "oh, my guy's out, gotta go with whatever." You still have the opportunity to field the best team, all that stuff. But where the bye weeks come into play is that your standards are lower.

Every week, in my run through good and bad situations, I pick out 21 total players (or defenses) to discuss. It’s not often that difficult. But this week, some of the situations were tough to define. There was no “quarterback against Seattle” this week. There was no “defense against Denver.” I had to get picky.

It will be the same when you pick out your weekly roster. You're going to have to dig a little deeper, have a little bit lower standards. It still could work out well - especially if you're in an all-week league and you already grabbed Eli Manning or Larry Donnell (and if so, kudos) - but I would wager that the average scores this week will be lower than some weeks, just because of the dearth of big names.

So, looking at the situations. Here we go:

Quarterbacks

Good situations

  • Colin Kaepernick ($8,100) hasn't had a really elite game yet this season. But against the Eagles, who have allowed the second-most points to opposing quarterbacks this year, and with Frank Gore underperforming, this seems like a good time for him to show up.
  • This isn't exactly a huge insight. The Buccaneers traveled to Atlanta a week ago and let Matt Ryan dominate; who's to say they won't travel to Pittsburgh and let Ben Roethlisberger ($7,700) do the same?
  • The Saints are a much different (read: much worse) team on the road, and Tony Romo ($7,500) has improved a bit as the season has gone on. I wouldn't built my FanDuel team around him this week, but if you spend a lot elsewhere, he's cheap enough that he could be a bargain there.

Bad situations

  • I've regularly highlighted the disparity between Drew Brees at home and on the road; Matt Ryan ($8,700) has a similar issue. He struggled in his one road game this year, and did well in his two home games. He's on the road this week. (And bonus tip, he's on the road or at a neutral all but one week between now and Week 12; sell high in full-season leagues.)
  • Cam Newton ($8,000) had nine rushes for 53 yards in his first two games last year; he has six for 26 this year. Sure, he's still getting over an injury, but that's a real difference, and a quarterback like Newton who isn't running is a lot less exciting.

Running backs

Good situations

  • I'm going down with this dang ship. Eddie Lacy ($8,000) is good. He's played three brutal run defenses through three weeks, and now he gets the Bears. I'll be right on this eventually.
  • The weather report in London is actually pretty good this week, but it always could rain, which would lead to more rushes. Even if that doesn't happen, the Dolphins are clearly wary on Ryan Tannehill, so that could lead to a lot of work for Lamar Miller ($6,900).
  • This is an easy name, but Donald Brown ($6,300) will be the absolute bell-cow for the Chargers against the terrible, terrible Jaguars, and makes a lot of sense this week in his own right. Add in his nice, cheap price, and he's a really nice bargain this week.

Bad situations

  • It's not just that he faces San Francisco on the road this week that limits LeSean McCoy ($8,700), it's the awfulness/injuredness of the Philadelphia offensive line. He did almost nothing a week ago against Washington, and while their run defense is at least decent, it did more to scare me about McCoy than it did to impress me about Washington.
  • Joique Bell ($6,500) is banged up, playing a great run defense, and, with Calvin Johnson hurting, is in an offense that might not have sufficient weapons. I don't hate Reggie Bush this week, with his pass-catching ability, but I think Bell is a stayaway.

Wide receivers

Good situations

  • I do believe teams look to make it up to their big names when the ball just doesn't go their way in a certain game. Well, the Texans didn't look toward Andre Johnson ($6,700) much a week ago, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if they fed him the ball more Sunday.
  • As long as we're dealing in soft factors, I don't even care about the Carolina defense in this situation, Steve Smith Sr. ($6,100) seems like the type to make sure he does something big in a revenge game. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong, but would you want to bet against Smith?
  • This is serious bargain territory. But with Eric Decker hurting and either out or severely limited Sunday, and not a lot of other pass-catching options on the Jets, I like Jeremy Kerley ($4,900) as a deep sleeper candidate this week.

Bad situations

  • Hurt quarterback. Uninspired numbers to begin with. And the Colts are actually decent against wide receivers. It all makes Kendall Wright ($5,700) someone I am absolutely staying away from unless I am just stuck. And in a weekly league, you're never stuck.
  • I actually like the value of James Jones ($5,300) for the season, but just as a said about Lamar Miller above, you never know if it will rain or be sloppy in London, and the Dolphins are fairly stout against opposing wide receivers.

Tight ends

Good situations

  • No team has allowed more points to opposing tight ends so far than the Cowboys. Jimmy Graham ($8,200) plays against the Cowboys Sunday. So ... there's that.
  • After being a preseason darling, Travis Kelce ($5,200) was quiet in Week 1, but has steadily increased his output since, and now looks like a nice option on an offense with weapons that are either bad or injured.

Bad situation

  • Sure, they haven't played any great tight ends so far, but the Packers have literally allowed five fantasy points total to opposing tight ends so far. Martellus Bennett ($6,000) was never going to keep up his early-season production, and this might be his quiet week.

Defenses

Good situations

  • Look, I think the Indianapolis Colts' defense ($5,400) is not very good. In three games, they've put up negative points twice, and did well against Jacksonville. Those are red flags. But with them possibly facing Charlie Whitehurst Sunday ... let's just say you could do way worse.
  • The Chiefs have a maybe-hurt running back, no wide receivers to speak of, and Travis Kelce. The New England Patriots' defense ($5,300) has been above-average so far, and I expect that to continue.

Bad situation

  • This is just one last "stop it with these guys" notice. We thought the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' defense ($4,500) would be good this year. Instead, they have been terrible. FanDuel clearly agrees, as they are tied for the least-expensive defense in the game, but I worry some will see them as a sleeper bargain, and no. Just no.
