Kirk Cousins’ father, Don, was diagnosed with cancer this offseason. Even as his son achieved the greatest successes of his NFL career on the field, earning Washington’s starting QB role and leading them to several big wins, Don was unable to attend any of the team’s games due to his cancer.
Kirk Cousins’ dad fought cancer to make it to Sunday’s game and got a game ball
Things haven’t been easy for the Cousins family in spite of Kirk’s on-field success. But Sunday, father and son shared a great moment.
He finally made it to Sunday’s game, and Kirk played a beauty. Cousins went 20-for-25 with 324 yards and four touchdowns with a perfect 158.3 QB rating. And after the game, he gave his dad a gift: a game ball.

When Cousins was removed from the game late in the second half, he kept a game ball under his arm as he stood on the sidelines. He still had the ball with him when he went on the field to greet other players, including Saints QB Drew Brees, and then he headed to the stands to give it to his father.
“To have him back was exciting, and then to have a game like that was a lot of fun, giving him the game ball,” Cousins told Comcast SportsNet’s Mitch Tischler. “And he just said, ‘Thank you. Thanks for a great day.’ It put a smile on his face. And it was special for our family, and we’ll enjoy it tonight.”
A wonderful moment on a wonderful day for the Cousinses. Best of luck to Don in his battle.
