Jeff Fisher is 4 losses away from being the biggest loser in NFL history

“Seven and nine bullshit” isn’t just a saying. It’s a way of life.

The Los Angeles Rams didn’t just lose last week. No, they lost in spectacular fashion after getting a 10-0 lead, sitting on it with an overly conservative, undisciplined approach, and watching it all get blown away by two Ryan Tannehill touchdowns in the last three minutes of the game. That loss also put Jeff Fisher in the history books.

Fisher has now lost 162 career games. That ties him with Tom Landry for the second-most losses by an NFL head coach. A loss this week to the Saints, and he’ll have second place all to himself. With four more losses, he’ll be the all-time leader, climbing past Dan Reeves, who has 165.

It took Landry 418 games to get that many losses. It only took Fisher 336 because his commitment to “7 and 9 bullshit” is strong.

We could make a hilarious Photoshop, but our friends at ESPN already did!

We kind of made one anyway.

Fisher 7-9

Amazingly enough, 7-9 is probably too charitable. 6-10 feels more appropriate, also because of the histrionics it carries with that coaching losses record, which would be most fittingly tied to Fisher, a man who makes $7 million a year, one of the NFL’s highest paid coaches, to roll out “seven and nine bullshit.”

And you have to admire his consistency. Since taking the Rams’ job in 2012, look at where his teams have stood after 10 games.

That kind of consistency is unmatched!

Before the season it was reported that Fisher was expected to get a contract extension, a reward for his outstanding achievement in the field of mediocrity. Strangely enough, that hasn’t materialized.

At the groundbreaking of the Rams’ new stadium late last week, owner Stan Kroenke deferred when asked about the status of his coach’s contract extension.

Earlier this month, when the Rams had only lost four in a row, Fisher was asked about his status and said that he was “not uncomfortable” and not looking over his shoulder. Maybe he is now, but it’s unlikely.

The Rams have a built-in excuse or two. They moved across the country this season and drafted a rookie quarterback with the No. 1 pick, who only made his first start this week.

Those excuses will probably hold water, too. After all, Kroenke never seemed to be all that concerned with the Rams’ record, and now that the team’s valuation jumped $2 billion just by relocating, who needs winning!

Fisher’s savvier than his coaching record would indicate, at least when it comes to the business of football versus, say, coaching football. You don’t survive 22 seasons as an NFL head coach with only six winning seasons and one Super Bowl appearance by not being a little cagey and knowing how to cover your ass.

Fisher hasn’t had a winning season since 2008. And here’s another fun fact about his record.

Without an extension this is Fisher’s last year under contract with the Rams. Let’s just hope Kroenke doesn’t do anything rash (he won’t) before the season’s over so Fisher can take his rightful place in the history books as the NFL’s all-time loser.

And let’s face it. Even if he does get fired or let go after the season, you know it’ll take roughly a year, two at most, until he’s coaching again. The only thing more predictable about the NFL than Fisher’s “seven and nine bullshit” is just how much most owners still appreciate mediocre head coaches.
