Tapwrit has won the 2017 Belmont Stakes, using a late sprint down the final furlong to unseat Irish War Cry, the favorite. It was all Irish War Cry up to that point, but at no point did the horse have a huge gap out in front and Tapwrit took advantage with the late charge.

They were 23.88 seconds at 14 of a mile, and 48.66 at the 12 mile mark. Irish War Cry had the lead from the start and was side-by-side with Meantime through the back stretch. It was about a half length lead through to the far turn.

Tapwrit made a late run for Irish War Cry down the last furlong. They cleared Patch and Gormley quite well near the line. Irish War Cry finally gave in just before the end of the race, when Tapwrit’s charge finally proved too much.

Tapwrit took the win, with Irish War Cry in second, Patch in third and Gormley in fourth.

Prior to the start of the race, Epicharis had to be scratched from the race. The horse’s connections hoped to run the colt after several days of veterinary treatment on his front right hoof. He showed some improvement prior to Saturday, but ultimately wasn’t in race shape for the Belmont and was scratched early on Saturday.

Notably absent from Saturday’s proceedings were Always Dreaming, who won the Kentucky Derby and Cloud Computing, who won the Preakness Stakes. Obviously, this means a Triple Crown was not in play for the Belmont, but it was still an exciting race as always.

Earlier in the day, Songbird made her return to racing by comfortably winning the Ogden Phipps on the Belmont Stakes Day undercard. Songbird started her career with 11 wins in 11 races, but lost her last start seven months ago.

She had a lot of hype going into Saturday and she delivered with a win in the Grade I stakes race. Full results for Saturday’s graded stakes undercard can be found here.
