Simone Biles’ NFL husband says he didn’t know who she was before dating app match

Ricky O'Donnell
Ricky O'Donnell has covered basketball at all levels for more than a decade at SB Nation. He’s currently the Associate Director of Programming.

Simone Biles was already considered one of the greatest gymnasts ever by the time she joined the dating apps to look for a new partner during Covid. Biles won four gold medals in Rio in 2016, and added a silver and bronze medals with Team USA in Tokyo in 2021. Somehow, Biles’ now husband didn’t even know who she was when they first met.

Biles married current Green Bay Packers defensive back Jonathan Owens earlier this year, and the couple shared the story of how they met on a recent podcast appearance. Biles and Owens matched on a dating app and started texting each other. Owens noticed that Biles had millions of followers and wondered if it was a fake profile at first. Owens admitted he didn’t know who Biles was when they first met, and tried to defend himself.

“When she won the Olympics, I was in college, we didn’t have NBC, we didn’t have Olympic channels, and we’re in camp,” Owens said. “So I’m not paying attention.”

Watch the podcast clip here:

Was Owens living under a rock? He must have been if he hadn’t heard of Simone Biles by the turn of the decade. Owens also said he was the “catch” in the relationship. Okay, man.

Owens actually has an inspiring story of making the league out of Missouri Western. He latched on with the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent, then moved to the Houston Texans for a few years, which is where he met Biles. The couple got engaged in 2022 and married in 2023.

By the way, Biles was recently named 2023 AP Female Athlete of the Year. She’s still as great as ever at 26 years old.

Biles was smiling and laughing and rolling her eyes throughout the segment of Owens talking about how they met. The look happy, which is the only thing that matters. It’s still hard to believe that her husband didn’t know who she was at first.
