James Cook, Ray Davis start/sit advice: What to do with Bills running backs in Week 7

James Cook is returning from injury while Ray Davis is dealing with an injury. We break down the fantasy football implications in Week 7.

The Buffalo Bills welcome the Tennessee Titans to town in Week 7 with the two teams going in opposite directions. The Titans are 1-4 with only a win over the struggling Dolphins to their credit. The Bills are 4-2 after snapping a two-game losing streak and lead the AFC East.

The Bills got a big performance from running back Ray Davis in their Week 6 win over the New York Jets, but they will welcome James Cook back to the lineup. Cook missed the win over the Jets with a toe injury and Davis impressed in his place. He rushed for 97 yards and caught three passes for 55 yards to help carry the Bills offense.

However, Davis has since injured his calf in practice, getting in limited work on Thursday and Friday. He has a questionable tag now for Sunday’s game. Meanwhile, Cook was a full participant in practice the final two days of the week and was removed from the final injury report.

James Cook start/sit advice

Cook slipped in overall fantasy rankings, but he is ninth in average fantasy points this season. He’s a strong start every week and a no-doubt start this weekend against the Titans. ESPN projects him at RB13 this week, while FantasyPros has him as RB19 in their consensus rankings.

The biggest concern moving forward is how much work Davis takes from him after a strong Week 6 performance. For this week, it’s less of a concern with his calf injury, even if he’s active. For Week 6, Davis is a very solid RB2 with sizable RB1 upside.

Ray Davis start/sit advice

Bills-Titans kicks off at 1 p.m. ET, so you’ll know pretty quickly whether or not Davis is available. The return of James Cook drops Davis considerably. ESPN projects him as RB62 while the FantasyPros consensus ranks him as RB44.

If Davis is active, you should probably avoid playing him unless you’re truly desperate at the position. He has upside, but the downside is significant with Cook back in the lineup. You’re best sitting him this week while we wait and see just what kind of workload he might garner on a more consistent basis.
