USA women’s rugby wins historic Olympic medal on walkoff ‘truck stick’ score

The Americans claimed bronze thanks to a stunning walk-off run from Alex Sedrick

In Tuesday’s bronze-medal women’s rugby sevens match between the United States and Australia, the Americans were five points — and nearly the length of the field — away from a loss in the closing seconds.

That’s when Alex Sedrick took matters into her own hands.

Sedrick powered her way through, and then away from, the Australians to deliver a walk-off run that tied the match, and her subsequent conversion gave the United States the bronze medal. Watch as Sedrick finds an opportunity, then drops a stiff arm reminiscent of what we have seen over the years from Derrick Henry.

Sedrick’s run sent the American sideline into chaos, but she still needed the conversion to secure the win for the United States. She calmly stepped to the mark and delivered, and bronze was secured for the Americans.

Maddison Levi scored for Australia to put them ahead with just over five minutes remaining. However, Levi missed her conversion, which kept the score at 12-7. Australia then kicked deep after their missed conversion, pinning the Americans roughly 85 meters away from paydirt. However, the missed conversion left the door open for the United States to pull off a miracle.

Which they did.

The bronze medal for the United States also made history, as it was the first women’s rugby medal for USA Rugby in Olympics history.
