Gonzaga vs. Chaminade final score: Bulldogs throttle Maui hosts, 113-81

The Gonzaga Bulldogs bounced back from their first loss of the season by mauling the hosts of the Maui Invitational.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs bounced back from their first loss of the season by clobbering the Chaminade Silverswords in the Maui Invitational on Tuesday, 113-81.

The Bulldogs' dreams of a Maui run were dashed immediately after they lost to the Dayton Flyers on Monday, and Gonzaga took a bit of those frustrations out on the hosting Division-II school.

Sam Dower and Gerard Coleman each scored 19 points for Gonzaga, and Kyle Dranginis and Kevin Pangos each added 18 in a solid offensive display. The Bulldogs -- who entered the game against Dayton leading the league in effective field-goal percentage -- picked right up where they left off, shooting 69.7 percent from the floor and hitting 13-of-23 three-pointers. Sophomore center Przemek Karnowski rebounded from a poor effort against Dayton, scoring 10 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.

Although defense was at a premium for both teams throughout the game, the Bulldogs made it a point to shut down guard Christophe Varidel after he torched the Baylor Bears in Chaminade's opening Maui Invitational game. In the game, Varidel fell one point shy of Adam Morrison's Maui Invitational record of 43 points, but did set the record for most threes with 10. The Bulldogs consistently threw different defensive looks at him, and he finished with eight points while attempting only three three-pointers.

In his absence, Lee Bailey stepped up for the Silverswords with 29 points, but it wasn't nearly enough to combat the Bulldogs offense. Seven Gonzaga players scored in double figures, and they had 21 assists on 46 field goals.

Gonzaga will play Arkansas for fifth place on Wednesday.
