Russ Smith scored 24 points to lead the Cardinals, who blew an early eight-point lead before going on a 16-4 run to close out the first half. More of the same occurred at the start of the second half, as Louisville's nine-point halftime lead vanished quickly with a 10-0 run by St. John's out of the locker room.
However, the Cards bounced back once again, thanks in part to a scuffle between Sir'Dominic Pointer and Montrezl Harrell that resulted in a double-technical and gave Louisville some momentum. A 33-32 St. John's lead quickly turned into a 53-39 advantage for Louisville, and the Cardinals remained in control for the rest of the way.
Phil Greene IV scored 21 points to lead St. John's (15-10, 7-6 Big East), while D'Angelo Harrison added 18.
Gorgui Dieng scored 10 points and pulled down 15 rebounds for Louisville (20-5, 8-4 Big East).
