The NCAA Tournament is off to a great start. There weren’t many upsets in Thursday’s early session, although a last-minute comeback from No. 3-seed Marquette over No. 14 Davidson is sure steal all the headlines. Now, No. 12-seeded Oregon has knocked off No. 5 Oklahoma State, and top-seeded Gonzaga nearly lost to Southern.
NCAA bracket update: Gonzaga advances, Oregon upsets Oklahoma St.
The Ducks brought us the first big upset of the NCAA Tournament. More could be on the way.
Gonzaga 64, Southern 58
The Bulldogs were really tested as the West Region's top-seeded team. Southern came out fearless and seemed to hit everything they took from behind the arc. Junior forward Kelly Olynyk was too much to handle though, as the Zags pulled away down the stretch. A deep 3-pointer from Kevin Pangos with two minutes on the clock was the dagger, putting his team up four.
With the win, Gonzaga will take on Wichita State in the third round. The winner will advance to the Sweet 16.
Oregon 68, Oklahoma State 55
This game represented the first true upset of the Big Dance. The Ducks, who many felt were under-seeded by the Selection Committee, came out with a chip on the shoulder and dominated the Cowboys. It was an impressive showing for Oregon, especially after winning three games in three days at the Pac-12 Tournament last week.
Next up for UO is a tough test against the St. Louis Billikins on Saturday.
