For starters, let’s take a peek at the site’s cover the morning after the team came back from down five points with 30 seconds left:

USA TODAY SportsIt seems like it’s become an annual occurrence. A 15 seed doesn’t beat a 2 within the first four hours of the tournament, and everybody immediately starts in with the “I thought it was supposed to be ‘March Madness’” talk.
As much as I’d like to fork-stab these people for tampering with a perfectly lucid basketball buzz, they had more of a legitimate gripe on Thursday than they ordinarily do...until the evening session rolled around. Once the sun set in the East, the sports world was treated to a pair of the vaunted 12/5 upsets and Harvard stunning third-seeded New Mexico.

USA TODAY SportsAs a team, Syracuse shot 52.9 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from long distance. The Grizzlies, meanwhile, only put up a 20.4 shooting percentage from the field while going 4-for-31 from three-point range.
The Orange outplayed the Grizzlies and had more rebounds, assists, blocks and steals -- of course, leading to a big edge in the most important statistic: points scored.

Andy LyonsThursday afternoon, No. 16 Southern gave No. 1 Gonzaga a run for their money. Louisville might have been watching, because they got up early against No. 16 North Carolina A&T and did not relent, blowing them out in a dunk-filled 79-46 romp.
Did you think that Louisville’s No. 1 defense would take a night off, just because they were playing arguably the weakest team in the pool of 64? They didn’t. They forced 25 turnovers, and turned a lot of them into fast break scores. They held the Aggies to 16-for-40 shooting, and although there were tons of misses to be grabbed, the Cardinals got most of them, allowing just four offensive boards. Although there was flukily good three-point shooting from North Carolina A&T, this game was not close in the slightest, and there were few facets of the game where Louisville didn’t win by a comfortable margin.

Bill Walton, Oregon fan?

Noted Grateful Dead fan Bill Walton went to UCLA and his Bruins lost to Oregon in the Pac-12 championship, but that didn’t stop him from throwing on his freshest green and yellow tie-dye and rooting for the Ducks this afternoon. As the Finals MVP of the 1977 NBA Champion Blazers and a member of the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame, that’s fine. Here’s Walton reveling in the Ducks’ 68-55 upset win over Oklahoma State:

Thearon W. HendersonThe NCAA Tournament is off to a great start. There weren’t many upsets in Thursday’s early session, although a last-minute comeback from No. 3-seed Marquette over No. 14 Davidson is sure steal all the headlines. Now, No. 12-seeded Oregon has knocked off No. 5 Oklahoma State, and top-seeded Gonzaga nearly lost to Southern.
With the win, Gonzaga will take on Wichita State in the third round. The winner will advance to the Sweet 16.

Thearon W. HendersonThis upset certainly wasn’t a rare occurrence, considering both tournament history and the under-seeding of Oregon. The 12-5 upset has occurred 38 times -- or 34 percent -- since 1985 when the tournament expanded to 64 teams.
Oregon will play No. 4 Saint Louis on Saturday. The Bilikens took care of New Mexico State 64-44.

Kevin C. CoxThe second round of the NCAA Tournament kicked off on Thursday afternoon. There haven’t been any big upsets as the dinner hours roll around, but there are still plenty of vulnerable top-seeded teams out there. Here is a look back at what has happened thus far.
Davidson had this game won with a minute left on the clock. Somehow, someway, the Golden Eagles dug deep and hit a couple of 3-pointers to cut the deficit to one point. The Wildcats then turned it over, giving MU one final shot.

Anthony Gruppuso-USA TODAY SportsThe Rams’ highest seeding came in 1985 when they were a No. 2, but they fell to a No. 7 Alabama team in the second round. Since then, Shaka Smart and the Rams have made a name for themselves as a double-digit party crasher, highlighted by a 2011 run to the Final Four as a No. 11 seed.
Tenacious defense is a trademark of the Rams, and Akron might have their hands full keeping control of the ball. Akron turns the ball over 14 times a game and the Rams force 19.9 turnovers a game to lead the nation.

Jamie SquireMissouri had a successful first season in the SEC by and large, but they struggled with consistency in the second half of the season. Since losing to UCLA on Dec. 28, the Tigers were only able to put together one three-game winning streak. That, paired with two consecutive opening NCAA Tournament losses, make the ninth-seeded Tigers a tough team to predict entering this tournament. However, Missouri is the second-best team in the country in rebounding, which should come in handy.
