NCAA basketball scores: Florida holds off Alabama

The Florida Gators stormed out to an early 12-2 lead in the opening minutes of this one, but the Alabama Crimson Tide would eventually settle down and tie things up by halftime. Florida came out strong to open up the second half, though, and would push their lead to double-digits once again by the second media timeout. Despite 25 points from Trevor Releford, Alabama was unable to make things interesting down the stretch.

All five of Florida's starters scored at least 11 points, with Scottie Wilbekin's 16 points leading the way. The Gators shot 62 percent from the floor and had their way with Alabama's defense. Chris Walker played just four minutes, though he scored four points and brought down a rebound in that brief span. He also committed two fouls, forcing Billy Donovan to sit him on the bench.

The Virginia Cavaliers picked up their 19th win of the season with a road victory over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Virginia actually trailed by a point at halftime, but they completely dominated the second half, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 35-15. UVA ranks as one of the best defensive teams in the country, and that was on display on Saturday afternoon.

Malcolm Brodgon led the Cavs with 14 points and 11 rebounds. That makes back-to-back games Brogdon has recorded a double-double. Joe Harris chipped in with 11 points, while Anthony Gill provided 11 points off the bench. Virginia out-rebounded Georgia Tech by 21, and their dominance on the glass was a big reason the Cavaliers owned the second half.

If you're a Pittsburgh Panthers fan, it's probably best to just forget this game ever happened. Games like this are the ones that really set college basketball back on a national level. Neither team shot above 38 percent from the floor and the Virginia Tech Hokies had 20 turnovers. Just one basket was scored in overtime; 21 of the 23 points in the extra periods came on free throws.

Virginia Tech somehow managed to make this a game despite being heavy underdogs on the road. They ran out of gas in the second overtime session, though the coaching staff had to be pleased with the effort. Jarell Eddie led the way with 15 points. As for Pitt, Cameron Wright scored a game-high 18 points while James Robinson had 16.

The North Carolina Tar Heels' roller coaster season continued on Saturday with an impressive road win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. James Michael McAdoo had a big game with 18 points, eight rebounds, four steals, two assists and a block. Marcus Paige chipped in with 16 points and six assists, while J.P. Tokoto had 13. Notre Dame had a couple of chances to close the deficit in the second half, but 17 turnovers would prove to be costly as they just couldn't keep control of the ball on the offensive end of the floor.
