Texas QB Foster Sawyer nearing decision, looking at three

The All Saints pro-style quarterback has three standing out among a handful of offers.

With a 6’5 frame, an undefeated record in two years as a starter, and more than 10 offers from which to choose, life would seem to be pretty good these days for Fort Worth (Texas) All Saints quarterback Foster Sawyer.

The most recent offer was a big one that came down last week:

The invitation to play for the Crimson Tide occurred a little more than a week after Sawyer traveled to Stillwater to take in Oklahoma State, which came days after Sawyer had attended a Junior Day at TCU and received his offer.

Sawyer’s 247Sports page lists those three schools as the “warmest” in his recruitment and the All Saints product has told multiple services in the last month that he plans to make a decision before the end of his school year, possibly within the next several weeks.

But there are some other moving pieces in his recruitment.

Alabama is pursuing Norman (Ok.) quarterback David Cornwell, who just visited Tuscaloosa and may be the top target at the position for the Crimson Tide at the moment. Without a visit to Alabama this spring (Sawyer has visited twice in the past), would Nick Saban accept a commitment from Sawyer with Cornwell still on the board?

And what about hometown TCU, a school to which Sawyer has connections because he has multiple family members who have gone there ($)? At the same Junior Day at which Sawyer received his offer, the Horned Frogs took a commitment from Decatur (Texas) quarterback Grayson Muehlstein, a decision that was surprising to at least one Texas recruiting analyst:

The question then becomes whether the Horned Frogs are willing to take two quarterbacks in the 2014 class with only senior Casey Paschal departing the program after this season. Given the ties that Sawyer has to TCU and the close proximity of the school, that decision by Gary Patterson and his staff on whether or not he has a committable offer could play a major role in his recruitment.

Then there is Oklahoma State, a team that may represent the best overall fit for Sawyer because Mike Gundy runs an offense that is extremely similar to the high-tempo spread attack used at All Saints, but doesn’t have an overwheming preference for highly mobile quarterbacks like the last several to start at TCU, while the pro-style attack at Alabama would represent a significant change in style for Sawyer.

The Cowboys also didn’t sign a quarterback in the 2013 class, leaving less competition directly in front of Sawyer if he was to opt for Oklahoma State as his college choice.

Fans of those three schools may not have to wait long to find out which school Sawyer believes is his best fit.
