Foster Sawyer commits to the TCU Horned Frogs

The 6’5, 215-pound pro-style quarterback is ranked as a consensus three-star prospect by the services. Among pro-style passers, the All Saints product is ranked in the 247Sports Composite as the No. 20 player at this position in the country and the No. 40 player in Texas.

Prior to his commitment, Sawyer held offers from Alabama, Missouri, Oklahoma State, SMU, and UCLA, but opted to stay close to home at the same school that multiple members of his family have attended.

However, there were other reasons for his commitment as well:

The take of Muhelstein back in late February was something of a surprise because the prevailing thought was that TCU would hold out for Sawyer, but the plan was always to take two quarterbacks in the 2014 class, an objective that now resoundingly accomplished by the Horned Frogs, who now have two pro-style quarterbacks with significant upside.

Both participated in the Dallas Elite 11 camp over the weekend in Irving at the Dallas Cowboys practice facility and while Muehlstein drew praise from Elite 11 coach Trent Dilfer, Sawyer held his own, especially in a drill focusing on rolling left and hitting a target on the run. With good mechanics that included getting his shoulders squared to the line of scrimmage, Sawyer was able to fire several balls on target while other quarterbacks bounced passes short of it.

When throwing the deep ball, it appeared that increased arm strength benefited him, as he has added some muscle mass to his upper body since 7-on-7 last summer. Instead of pushing balls at times, Sawyer was able trust his power to drive the ball and was able to do so successfully, even on a day when the wind was strong and blowing in his face.

He’s not the athlete that Muehlstein is overall, but his mechanics are more crisp and polished overall.

After taking Temple (Texas) quarterback Zach Allen in the 2013 class, the Horned Frogs now have a strong group of quarterbacks for the future -- even if one or two don’t fulfill their significant potential in college, the odds are high that at least one of them will hit.

And that should help coach Gary Patterson sleep easily at night when he looks ahead. Or at least as well as someone as intense as Patterson can sleep.
