TCU vs. Texas score update: David Ash benched for Case McCoy

A very bad Thanksgiving for David Ash meant No. 16 Texas’s quarterback controversy is all the way back, and TCU’s up, 14-3, at the break.

Update: David Ash returned to start the second half.

Texas has been trying to solidify its quarterback position for a long time now. Last year, David Ash and Case McCoy traded the reins back and forth, with Ash being named the starter coming into 2011. He's played well at times, but he's also seen McCoy take over at points.

That is what's happening against TCU. Ash threw two interceptions in the red zone, then fumbled the gravy-lacquered ball away while being pressured by Stansly Maponga (via ESPN):

McCoy entered with 32 minutes left in the game and Texas trailing, 14-3. The Longhorns’ offense has only 125 yards, with the passing game accounting for only 82 of them.

The move did not pay immediate dividends, with a sack by Devonte Fields on third down meaning a three-and-out that was bailed out by a roughing the punter penalty. The second chance was ruined too, by Fields (he's everywhere!) and a false start.

McCoy’s thrown 24 times this year, with a 211.62 passer rating, after putting up a 132.33 in 145 throws last year. He’s not as mobile as Ash, which could make the already one-dimensional Texas offense even simpler for Gary Patterson to zero in on.

TCU is dominating the ground game, 131 yards to 43, with three different Horned Frogs putting up 29 or more, thanks in large part to some wretched Texas tackling. Quarterback Trevone Boykin has completed all four of his passes, run the ball well and looked comfortable in his option distribution.
