Big East expansion: Fresno State, UNLV reportedly contacted

Big East commissioner Mike Aresco has reportedly contacted Fresno State and UNLV, as Big East officials scramble to save the conference after losing many key members over the past year.

Big East commissioner Mike Aresco reportedly reached out to both Fresno State and UNLV about potentially joining the conference, as the Big East looks to survive amidst the conference realignment turmoil.

According to CBS Sports, informal talks have taken place between the Fresno State and Aresco, but talks have been kept secret to avoid “offending people” at various institutions.

In the past year, the Big East has lost Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Rutgers and Louisville to the ACC and Big 10, and just last week, the seven Catholic Big East basketball-only schools announced that they are leaving the Big East and instead will start their own, stable conference.

Consequently, Aresco and other Big East officials have been scrambling to somehow save the conference. As currently constructed, the Big East will have 12 football schools in 2013, including Boise State and San Diego State, who are both scheduled to join the conference on July 1. SMU, UCF, Houston and Memphis are also scheduled to join the conference in 2013, with Tulane and East Carolina scheduled to join in 2014.
