Florida Atlantic head coach Carl Pelini has reportedly resigned from his position effective immediately, ESPN’s Brett McMurphy is reporting, effective immediately.

It is strange timing for the move, as the Owls play Tulane, 4-0 in conference play, in just three days. Pelini was hired just last season, and it's hard to imagine the university would have such a short leash with the former Nebraska defensive coordinator.

Florida Atlantic is 2-6 on the year, and is coming off a 45-10 beatdown loss to Auburn. An early blowout loss occurred against Miami, where Pelini called for a spike on fourth down. Their two wins came against South Florida and conference opponent UAB. After Tulane, the Owls play Southern Mississippi, New Mexico State and FIU -- all likely wins.

Last season, FAU went 3-9 in Pelini’s first year as head coach. Pelini is the second head coach in the program’s history, as Howard Schnellenberger manned the team from 2001 through 2011.

Pelini’s brother, Bo, is firmly on the hot seat in his position at Nebraska.
